Why Did My Chain Break?

Hands examining delicate gold and silver chains arranged on a white marble jewelry tray beside a pair of pliers.

I get this question more often than you might think.

A broken chain doesn’t necessarily mean there was something wrong with it. Chains are delicate by nature, and sometimes all it takes is one unexpected pull.

Maybe your dog catches a paw on your necklace while saying hello. Maybe you're in the shower, your hair gets tangled around the chain, and you pull without realizing it. Sometimes it catches on clothing. And sometimes, despite being careful, things just happen.

The good news is that a little prevention can help.

One of the easiest habits is simply taking your necklaces off before you shower or work out. Water itself isn't necessarily the issue. It's everything that happens while you're wearing the chain. Wet hair tangles more easily, towels can catch, and workouts add plenty of opportunities for a necklace to get pulled or snagged.

I know taking jewelry off every time isn't always convenient, especially when it's a necklace you love and rarely think about removing.

But chains aren't indestructible, and they're really not designed to win a tug of war with your hair, your towel, your workout clothes, or your dog.

A little extra care can save you a trip to see me for a repair.

Although if it does happen, I promise you're not the first.
